Disaster occurred in Southwest Detroit on February 17th when a 54-inch Water Main broke, flooding streets and hundreds of homes with icy water.
Nearly 400 homes were affected in the flooding that occurred after a 54-inch Water Main broke in Southwest Detroit on Monday, February 20th. Hundreds of families have been displaced since then, either sheltering in hotels or with family members. Many residents in the flood area still remain in their homes though, some without heat, power, or transportation. Through donations and community collaboration, we hope to help offer these families some relief in this extremely difficult time.

Detroit mother Tateona Williams lost two children on February 10th after freezing temperatures became too much. For months she had to live in her van with her mother and four children, and because she was unable to find proper resources for housing, this tragedy occurred. Detroit needs infrastructure to support families and mothers like Ms. Williams, and instead of being lifted up and supported, Ms. Williams was charged with neglect. We work so that tragedies that happened to Ms. Williams and many others are not overlooked. We need to create a system that cares for and helps its people, instead of punishing them for systematic faiures.
The Detroit Area Disaster Recovery Group LTRG - Long Term Recovery Group, a community-based organization galvanized to recover from the devastating flooding and sewer backups caused by climate change over the past ten years. We aim to address Environmental and Public Health issues such as Groundwater Flooding, Sewer Backup, Toxic Mold and Frequent Power Outages throughout communities in Detroit.
Mold exposure can have significant negative effects on health, particularly for individuals with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems. Inhalation of mold spores or contact with moldy surfaces can trigger allergic reactions, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and skin rashes. For those with asthma, mold exposure can exacerbate symptoms, leading to increased frequency and severity of asthma attacks. Additionally, certain types of mold produce mycotoxins, which can have more severe and difficult to treat infections, potentially leading to hospitalizations and even death in individuals from vulnerable population groups like immunocompromised individuals, the elderly and children.
Beyond physical health issues, mold exposure can also impact mental health and overall well-being. Prolonged exposure to mold has been linked to increased risks of anxiety and depression, particularly among those living in damp or mold-infested homes.
Additionally, the presence of mold can create stress and hopelessness for individuals concerned about their living conditions, further impacting their mental health. Therefore, addressing mold issues in homes and workplaces is crucial to protecting both physical and mental health.
After the disaster occurred, the response to it started with FEMA collaboration at a Feed Your Neighborhood Corp. Food Distribution. Getting in touch with disaster survivors was the first step in building relationships towards recovery.
