After the devastating flooding in East Detroit in June 2021, Feed Your Neighborhood Corp. began to quickly focus on helping residents recover from the flood by assisting with clean up, providing cleaning items and technical support with completing claim forms through GWLA, DSDW, & FEMA. FYN staff and community members formed a Community Task Force which led advocacy efforts to ensure residents receive an equitable share of community resources to replace emergency items and continued engagement to keep neighbors informed and uplifted. In 2022, The Detroit Disaster Recovery Group was formalized with support from FEMA as a Long Term Recovery Group.
The Detroit Area Disaster Recovery Group is a volunteer-based, community-led organization galvanized to recover from the devastating flooding and sewer backups caused by climate change over the past ten years. We aim to address Environmental and Public Health issues such as Groundwater Flooding, Sewer Backup, Toxic Mold, and Frequent Power Outages throughout communities in Detroit.
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. We offer a variety of opportunities for individuals and groups to get involved and make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
